Steeped in history and culture, Washington D.C. was designed by Pierre L’Enfant in 1791 and divided into four quadrants, NE, NW, SE and SW.
The locals refer to Washington DC as D.C. or the District.
All the U.S. states are represented by street names, like New York, Connecticut, and,Wisconsin, and, run diagonally. Streets running north to south are numbered streets. Streets west and east are lettered streets.
All the streets begin at the U.S. Capitol.
When following directions, pay close attention to the quadrant since lettered and numbered streets can be found in each area.
