Today, this 2.4 square mile city adjacent to the District line is home to about 18,000 people. Takoma Park is known for its tree-lined streets and beautifully restored Victorian homes. Takoma Park history
Takoma Park was founded in 1883 by developer Benjamin Franklin Gilbert. At that time, residents of Washington DC were plagued by malaria and mosquitos, and since Takoma Park was at a higher elevation, it was a safe haven from these troubles. In 1904, Takoma Park Maryland became the world headquarters for the 7th Day Adventist Church. The church as since relocated to Silver Spring Maryland.
