How old is Upper Marlboro?
Named after the first Duke of Marlborough, Upper Marlboro was settled in 1695. At that time, the Church of England was established as the state church of Maryland. In 1814, Upper Marlboro was taken over by British forces during their campaign leading up to the Battle of Bladensburg and the burning of Washington D.C.
During the eighteenth century, it was a tobacco marketing town. Draft boats would carry tobacco from Western Branch to the Patuxent River out to the Chesapeake Bay and onto boats anchored in the Atlantic Ocean. In the late 1800s Upper Marlboro changed from a booming tobacco trading town to a quieter farming community. This happened in part due to the years of erosion and sediment build up in the Western Branch making it impossible for boat travel.

Upper Marlboro is about 17 miles from Washington D.C. and Md Rt. 4 is the quickest way to get to the nation's capital. Largo, Mitchellville, Clinton and Camp Springs are a few Maryland towns close to Upper Marlboro. It's a twenty minute drive from Upper Marlboro to Chesapeake Beach a small but popular town on the coast of the Chesapeake Bay. National Harbor, known for casinos and major entertainment venues and restaurants is a twenty five minute drive northwest from the town.
