Silver Spring is an unincorporated city spanning almost 8 square miles with a population of about 81 thousand people. Metro's redline train runs through Silver Spring and includes train stops at downtown Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont.
Silver Spring is named for the mica flecked spring located in Acorn Park downtown. Downtown Silver Spring has a nightlife, great restaurants with worldwide cuisine. There is an ice skating rink, and several theatres including the AFI Theatre and Cultural Center, the Silver Spring Black Box theatre featuring local plays and musicians and the Silver Spring Stage a performing arts theatre.

The Forest Glen neighborhood has a Metro station located along Georgia Avenue. Holy Cross Hospital and the National Museum of Health and Medicine are located in Forest Glen. St. John the Evangelist church, originally built in 1774 and rebuilt in 1894, is located in Forest Glen. It is one of the oldest churches in Maryland.
